In 1999, Tony & Brenda Lyon were on a trip to a multi-generational winery in Australia when they got the idea to bring the experience home to Maine. In 2017, they purchased a tract of beautiful hayfields and pasture in Leeds and embarked on building the winery of their dreams! Right away, they planted plenty of cold-hardy varietals; a type of wine grape that’s been crossbred to withstand the colder temperatures that Maine experiences. They knew that Maine had a longstanding tradition of fruit winemaking, but really wanted to demonstrate that you can have excellent, locally-grown and made wine from grapes in Maine too!

These days, WillowsAwake not only grows and makes wines out of a wide variety of cold-hardy grapes which you can taste in their tasting room, they also are home to a farm-to-table restaurant and an event venue, all of which serve as pioneering spaces for the advancement of Maine’s wine scene.
