A small-batch Portland winery specializing in wines made from rhubarb.

eighteen twenty wines

Based in Portland, eighteen twenty wines specializes in making rhubarb wines. Why rhubarb? For one, it grows remarkably well in Maine, having originally come to our backyards and gardens from China in the year 1820 (hence eighteen twenty's name). The vegetable (and yes, it is a vegetable!), when eaten raw, is super tart and has a texture similar to celery, which makes it a great sour and crunchy addition to sweets. Eighteen twenty's owners, husband and wife duo Amanda O'Brian and Alex Denniston sought to make use of this supercrop past its traditional place in pies and jams, now producing a variety of unique and delicious wines made from local Maine rhubarb! The business was originally founded by O’Brian in 2015, who was initially inspired by a friend’s homebrew of rhubarb wine that she fell in love with. Given Maine’s robust reputation for local produce and small entrepreneurship, it’s no surprise that eighteen twenty and their lineup of five core wines have enjoyed robust success in the past few years. If you’re looking for a delicious, balanced, summery drink, seek out a bottle of eighteen twenty today!
