Baer's Best Beans
Growing Heirloom Bean Varieties for Over 30 Years.

You can’t talk about food in New England without starting at the very beginning: baked beans! Indigenous populations in our state cooked cultivated beans in pots in the ground with maple syrup and venison to create a sweet, savory, and hearty dish that was quickly adopted by European settlers. Drawing from this heritage, Charley & Carol Baer were inspired to found Baer’s Best Beans in an attempt to preserve New England’s local, heirloom varieties. Opening the farm in the 80s with decades-old equipment and a handful of beans gifted by friends, Charley has grown Baer’s into an established farm in Southern Maine producing over 20 varieties of beans, many of which are not grown commercially anywhere else!
Because they’re a smaller farm, the Baers can assure the highest quality product with every step of the growing and harvesting process. They’re particularly proud of their heirloom hand grading machines that allow for them to produce such a high quality bean, you can cook them right away, without having to soak them overnight. Delicious!
