Maine Seaweed in the Kitchen: Home Cooking with Coastal Flavors
Did you know that Maine leads the nation in seaweed production? It’s true! But, despite our state’s role in farming and harvesting seaweed, this delicious ocean crop is underutilized in our everyday diets. There are many reasons to start incorporating more seaweed into your home cooking – not only is it healthy and supportive of our local food producers, but it can be absolutely delicious! If you’re interested in cooking with seaweed, but don’t know where to start, Maine Coast Sea Vegetables is here to help.
On June 7th, join Kara Ibarguen of Maine Coast Sea Vegetables for a hands-on cooking workshop designed to increase your knowledge of local seaweed species and get you comfortable cooking with them! Learn to identify a variety of Maine seaweed species through an immersive touch tank experience before putting your aprons on and whipping up a four-course meal featuring seaweed in every dish (yes, even dessert!). Participants will make an appetizer, salad and main course before enjoying a dessert provided by MCSV. And, while you’re cooking, enjoy a delicious non-alcoholic seaweed beverage from the Maine Tasting Center bar.
All ingredients and equipment will be provided and participants will leave with recipes and product lists – ready to cook up their own seaweed dishes at home. Recipes cooked in this class are vegetarian and can be made gluten free upon request.
